Supplements: Where To Start

Have you ever asked yourself…

  • Are nutritional supplements effective?
  • Are they safe?
  • What are the side effects?
  • Do we really need them?
  • Is it worth the cost?
  • Where do I even begin finding the best brand?

We’ve been down that road before with many families who have asked the same questions you’re asking now.

The answer: it depends.

Everyone is different.

Some individuals get all the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients they need to grow, develop, learn, play, focus, sleep, and more, through the food they eat.

Some individuals benefit from supplementing their diet with one or two supplements.

Some individuals benefit from supplementing their diet with multiple supplements.

The top 6 supplements that usually provide the broadest benefits for children with autism are magnesium, zinc, vitamin D, Omega-3 fatty acids, probiotics, and a multivitamin.

A magnesium deficiency may lead to hyperactivity, distractibility, impulsivity, muscle spasms, and poor sleep quality.

A zinc deficiency can contribute to picky eating, sensory processing disorder, poor eye contact, inflammation, infections, and skin conditions.

A Vitamin D deficiency can contribute to learning disabilities, eczema/skin conditions, and frequent infections.

A deficiency in Omega-3 fatty acids can lead to digestive difficulties, skin conditions, and immune dysfunction.

Probiotics are the “good bacteria” which support a healthy gut.  The good bacteria maintain healthy gut flora, prevent overgrowth of yeast, and produce healthy nutrients.

A good multivitamin supports the absorption of nutrients, improves digestion, and is full of a range of powerful nutrients.

Wherever you are on this journey, it’s important to speak with your doctor before beginning any new supplement.
